- There are a few interactions on the Mac between the finder and
- application programs that still grate on me:
-
- (1) select several files belonging to one application (e.g. MacWrite),
- and then choose "Print" from the "File" menu -- there's no way (I am
- aware of) to predict the order that the files will be passed to MacWrite
- for processing;
-
- (2) as above, select several files for printing: MacWrite puts up the
- standard dialog box to allow you to set the number of copies, percent
- enlargement, ... the problem is that your specifications only get
- applied to the first file processed (at least only the first file
- produces multiple copies if you are trying for two copies of
- everything...)
-
- MacWrite 4.767 anyone?

-
- I don't think so. Finder 6.0 uses the Multifinder temporary memory
- allocation services, which is why it can run effectively in 160K of
- memory. These Multifinder calls allow an application to temporarily
- allocate memory, which hasn't been assigned to any other application.
-
- For example, if only the Finder is running on a 1Mb machine, there is
- more than 512K of RAM that is unused. An application can ask
- Multifinder to allocate a handle for it out of this memory.

- Dear Herb -
-
- It is possible to link object files from the MPW compilers (MPW Pascal
- and MPW C) and the MPW assembler together. In addition, any MPW tool
- that uses the MPW object file format (at present the above tools and TML
- Modula-2 and Semper Software's Modula-2 compiler, but not Manx's MPW

-
- Hardware configuration: Mac II with a color monitor. Software is
- multifinder; I think the system is 4.2 and the finder is 6.0. The
- setting in the monitors cdev is the highest (16 I think).
-
- (1) Sometimes when the machine is booted the background printing program
- comes up first but there isn't anything listed in the queue. Clicking on
- its icon in the top right of the screen brings up the finder and
- everything seems ok. Is this something that I should be worried about?
-
- (2) When I use the Kolor cdev or double click on one of the color boxes
- for fiddling with the desktop background pattern I get a color wheel
- (which I think may be called the "color picker") and I can fiddle around
- with the colors. While fiddling with this color wheel I get the
- impression that I can get lots of interesting colors. When I click on
- the OK box the color that I have picked doesn't "take". With Kolor It
- seems to only use the nearest "primary" colors (the center of the color
- at the outside of the wheel). With the background fiddler it switches
- to the nearest color of what seems to be some built-in fixed colors.
- What makes it strange is that while fiddling with the color wheel I can
- get lots of interesting colors in the sample box in the top left.

-
- You may have heard that the Mac II can display 16 colors from a palette
- of over 16 million. It is those 16 million colors that you see when you
- play with the Color Picker color wheel. But once you choose a color the
- color is returned to the program that asked for the color (the Kolor
- cdev in this case), and it is up to that program to make sure that
- ACTUAL color is available (i.e. one of your 16). But that may not be
- appropriate, and it's not in the case of the Kolor cdev because it would
- mess up other programs that needed the color that your chosen color
- replaced.
-
- So instead Kolor just gives you the nearest color which is currently
- available. This effect is much less noticeable if you purchased the
- video expansion kit because with 256 colors active at once you generally
- have at least one that is pretty close to the one you chose. So save up
- those pennies! :-)

- It just so happens that I know the brother of (one of) the developer(s)
- of Fullwrite. I know that the delay was caused to make a bullet-proof
- product; and when the ROM changed, this screwed up the projected
- delivery date.
-
- Well, it seems this developer had made a promise: He swore if FullWrite
- wasn't finished by November 15, he would have himself publicly tarred
- and feathered. True to his word, a photo of this memorable event will be
- published soon, I think in Macizine. Watch for it!
-
- When Fullwrite does show up, it should be really great.

- A friend of mine has access to a Cray for five minutes a week (Don't
- ask how, it's a long story). The Cray belongs to Westinghouse (XMP/4
- I think). I am interested in the product that Apple created for their
- Cray XMP, which I believe was call the CRAY FINDER.
-
- Does anyone have information about it, how it interfaces to a Cray (We
- plan to hook up to it through ARPA Net).

- Well, I got the new system the other day and was anxious to try it. So
- I prepared a disk for it and fired it up. I brought up Quark Xpress,
- opened a document and sent it to the printer... I got a series of
- PostScript errors. A call to Quark revealed, yes there are problems
- with the new system release... wait for version 1.1 of Xpress, due Dec.
- 1. Till then I'd advise not updating your hard disk, particularly with
- MultiFinder.
-
- [ I just made a separate boot disk with the old System/Finder and a copy of
- XPress on another disk. I'm not not going to update my disk just because
- XPress doesn't run - Jeff ]

- Our department recently installed AppleTalk Cabling, thinking we would
- never exceed the 1000 ft. limit for cable length. Well-you guessed it-
- after going around heating ducts and out into hallways looking for
- right-of-ways, we put in WAY OVER 1000 ft. Not only is performance down
- at the ends of the daisy-chain, but everything else in the middle is
- mired down too. We use FastPath (kinetics) to talk to other apple
- nets, but can not see all of them at this time (same goes for
- LaserWriters & ImageWriters on all nets). I read in the 9/8 issue of
- MacWEEK that PhoneNet can be added onto existing AppleTalk, length
- restrictions go away, and everything will work just fine. What I need
- to know is How do we do it and How Much will it cost us. We are going to
- add maybe ten more devices, and need to have this problem whipped before
- the new stuff comes. This is turning into a real headache, and I would
- appreciate any and all suggestions using Farallon or non-Farallon items.
- Mail directly to me, or post your reply if you think it would be useful
- info for all would-be network administrators.
-
- Thanks In Advance
